Acknowledging the emission of “fugitive dust” from its plant at Amona-Bicholim on Saturday evening, the Vedanta Limited claims to have taken all steps to reduce and control such emission.
“There has been a small emission of fugitive dust from our plant on Saturday evening at Amona, Bicholim. Heavy rains during the last two days has resulted in a minor breakdown at our blast furnace at Navelim-Bicholim, which caused slight cooling of the blast furnace and disruption in normal melting process,” stated a press release issued by Vedanta, formerly known as Sesa Sterlite Ltd. and Sesa Goa Ltd.
“Hard blowing of the casting, which is standard practice during such abnormality, is being carried out. The de-dusting system is provided for normal working. However due to this situation, some fugitive emissions may have been observed in the form of reddish fumes.”
The company The company stated that the revival of such condition takes “minimum 24 hours, depending on the condition of the furnace by ensuring the safety of the men and machinery.”
“We want to proactively inform the media so that the public is informed of the situation first-hand. The management has taken all steps to reduce and control such emission. But some fugitive emission during the blowing of the cast may be seen from the plant area till the situation becomes normal,” added the company's press note.
