According to information, the incident took place as 85-year old Shantabai Naik Savordekar of Sanvordem was going to Shirgao along with her daughter and her son-in-law from Vasco in a car (GA-06-D-9022).
Due to heavy rains and strong winds in Mormugao taluka, a coconut tree came down crashing on their moving car near the St Anthony Chapel.
The car was badly damaged and Savordekar, who was seated on the back seat was grievously injured in the mishap.
She was rushed to the Cottage Hospital at Chicalim with the help of a taxi, but doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Narrating the sequence of events, Sanvordekar’s son-in-law, Shailesh Bhagat, who was driving the car said he had slowed down the vehicle as the rains intensified.
“With strong rains, we lowered the car speed and just as I was planning to park by the roadside for safety, a coconut tree fell down on our car. I was in shock and did not know how to react, but we immediately shifted her to the Cottage Hospital, but doctors declared her dead,” said Bhagat.
