A person was killed while two others were injured when a car and a crane collided with each other on the NH66 highway at Dhargal.
According to sources, a car was proceeding from Panaji to Pune when the vehicle dashed against a crane on the NH66 at around 8 am on Wednesday. The impact was such that Ricky Banavat (26) from Pune died on the spot, while the two others who were travelling with him in the car were seriously injured and are being treated in a hospital.
Onlookers said the crane belonging to the company which is constructing the link road for the Mopa Airport was being diverted on the link road and the car collided with the crane.
On hearing about the accident, local MLA Pravin Arlekar rushed to the accident spot to help the victims. Pernem Police Inspector Dattaram Raut visited the spot and did the panchanama, and shifted the injured to the hospital. The body of the deceased was sent to the GMC hospital at Bambolim for post-mortem.
Locals have expressed alarm over the growing frequency of road mishaps on the NH66 in Pernem.
Locals said work on the Mopa link road is currently underway, with heavy vehicles and cranes at work.
They complained that ongoing work on the NH66 and link road has endangered other motorists, as contractors carry huge materials required for the flyover at any time of the day.
MLA Arlekar had warned the contractor to inform locals when huge materials are being transported or to transport them at night. But this instruction has fallen on deaf ears and many times, cranes are seen parked on both sides of the road, causing a nuisance to other vehicles.
