In the largest drugs haul in Canacona taluka during the year, Canacona police nabbed a 35-year-old drugs peddler from Karur in Tamil Nadu in the wee hours of Monday and seized ganja valued at Rs 3.68 lakh at Palolem.
Addressing a news conference, Canacona police inspector Pravin Gawas said Kalicharan Krishnan was caught red-handed in possession of 3.68 kilos of ganja valued at Rs 3.68 lakh barely hours after arriving in Goa.
Acting on credible information, PI Gawas said a police team led by PSI Dhiraj Devidas and PSI Swadesh Desai laid the trap and nabbed a person moving in a suspicious manner near German Bakery in Ourem-Palolem in the wee hours of Monday.
“The accused was found in illegal possession of 3.68 kilos of a dry green-colored leafy flowery substance with seeds suspected to be ganja and valued at about Rs 3.68 lakh. The accused, identified as Kalicharan Krishnan of Karur-Tamil Nadu, had reached Goa only on Sunday morning and was staying at a resort at Patnem-Canacona.”
“He has been arrested under Sections 20(b)(ii)(B) of NDPS Act,” said PI Gawas.
According to police, the accused who had arrived in Palolem on Sunday morning and was staying at a resort at Patnem, was reportedly looking for customers and middlemen. He was nabbed by while trying to get in touch with some contacts.
Police will produce the accused before the JMFC to seek remand and lady PSI Rifha Barretto is investigating the case under the supervision of Canacona PI Gawas.
According to PI Gawas, the seizure of 3.680 kilos of ganja is the largest narcotics haul in Canacona taluka during this year.
There have been four other drugs related arrests in Canacona taluka during the year.
PI Gawas has appealed to people in Canacona to cooperate and coordinate with police to make Canacona beaches safe for visitors and tourists alike and to keep Canacona free from the menace of drugs.
