A labourer died while another was injured after the retaining wall of a house collapsed while they were at work constructing a sewer at Khorlim-Mapusa on Saturday.

The incident took place at about 12.30 pm, when Tojammel Haque alias Raju (38) and Vishal Saru (21), both from West Bengal, were involved in digging for the construction of a new sewer on the side of an internal road at Kasarwada-Khorlim. The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) had hired a contractor to construct this sewer in Ward 18, and the contractor had hired both the labourers for work on daily wages.

While excavation work was in progress, the retaining wall of a house suddenly collapsed on them, trapping them under the debris. The injured labourers were first admitted to the Mapusa District Hospital for treatment, and Raju was later referred to the GMC hospital at Bambolim, where he died while undergoing treatment. Saru is undergoing treatment at the Mapusa District Hospital.

Both labourers were staying in a rented room in Karaswada-Mapusa.

Upon receiving information about the incident, Mapusa police visited the spot and conducted the panchanama. Mapusa Police Sub-Inspector Babalo Parab is conducting further investigation into the case.
