As many as 11 shops and a flat in Mapusa were burgled on Friday night, with burglars stealing cash and jewellery worth about Rs 4 lakh.
According to sources, burglars broke open the shutters of 11 shops in the market area, including a restaurant, a clothing store, a mobile shop, a ladies’ tailor, a footwear shop, and wholesale/retail outlets.
They ransacked the shops and stole cash from the shop tills and other items worth about Rs 1-2 lakh.
It is suspected that the burglars were aware that shops would likely have cash on hand due to the festive season.
A flat in a multi-storyed residential building in Ganeshpuri was also burgled, with cash and jewellery worth about Rs 2.5 lakh stolen from the premises.
The burglaries in the Mapusa market have shocked traders and residents alike, raising serious questions about police patrolling and security.
Many wondered how the burglaries could have taken place when a significant police force is usually deployed in the Mapusa market area at night.
