PERNEM

The Pernem Zonal Agriculture Officer Prasad Parab has estimated that paddy fields across 120 hectares and banana plantations spread over 10 hectares have been damaged by the floods in Pernem on Friday, causing a loss of about Rs 30 lakh.

Heavy rains had forced authorities to open the gates and release excess water at the Tillari Dam, causing water to overflow from the Chapora River and flood villages along the river banks.

Ibrampur, Hankhane, Chandel, Hasapur, Kasarwarne, Shirgal, Dhargal and Tuem were among the villages which were most affected in Pernem taluka.

Pernem taluka has been leaning towards agriculture and plantations, with bananas from Pernem having a good demand during Chaturthi. However, farmers were upset that the floods destroyed their crops.
