Fifteen cattle were killed on the spot after being run over by a speeding goods train at Dhadem-Sanvordem on Wednesday morning.
Sources informed that the incident took place while the cattle were reportedly crossing the railway tracks and were subsequently hit by the goods train.
Two cattle, however, survived the accident and were later shifted to the animal husbandry department by locals with the help of railway officials for medical care and attention. Incidentally, no one came forward to claim ownership of the dead cattle.
The dead cattle were later buried at a nearby place with the help of local panchayat member Shashikant Naik and other locals along with railway officials.
It is reportedly learnt that in such incidents, cattle owners avoid coming forward to claim the cattle for fear of strict fines and punishment under the railway law.
Sources also informed that a similar incident had taken place some 12-15 years ago.
