The relentless rain for the last more than a week coupled with the sudden surge in the Chapora River led to flooding with water making its way into homes and damaging houses in Bardez early Friday morning.
However, the water level went down later in the evening.
The villages of Camurlim, Nadora, Revora and Colvale all in Tivim constituency faced the brunt of the water surge.
The sudden rise in water began in the wee hours of Friday forcing people to come out of their houses as water level began to rise.
Sources informed that one plausible reason for the sudden surge in Chapora river could be because of release of water from Tillari dam.
Incidentally, a day earlier, the Tillari irrigation office had informed that due to incessant rainfall they will release water from the dam.
Altogether 167 houses and 540 persons were affected due to the floods and nine persons had to be evacuated from the four villages.
Tivim MLA, Nilkant Halarnkar visited the affected villages in an attempt to reassure the villagers and provide help to those in need. “For last three weeks it has been raining in Goa. I have never witnessed so much rain and so water never climbed up to this level as this year,” Halarnkar said.
He said affected people have been accommodated in the nearby government primary school.
Mamlatdar Laxmikant Kuttikar, Joint Mamlatdars, Shailendra Desai and Anil Rane besides the talathis of the four villages and circle inspectors were monitoring the situation at the site.
Mapusa Fire Brigade and police force were on standby for any eventuality but the water level went down considerably late in the evening.
