MARGAO
In a bid to put a stop to the reckless dumping of market waste in the city's lanes and by-lanes of the congested new market, the Margao Municipal Council has embarked on a novel exercise of collecting waste right at the doorsteps of the business establishments in the new market.
While bins have surfaced all along the market passages, a rickshaw is permanently stationed at the Sadekar lane for waste collection generated in the market complex.
Around 180 bins have been stationed all along the passage of the market, while a rickshaw is permanently parked at the Sadekar lane to facilitate dumping of waste into the vehicles instead of the waste finding its way in the rickshaw. A labourer is stationed permanently at the Sadekar lane to ensure that even if some waste finds its way in the lane, the same is collected and dumped in the rickshaw parked right in the lane.
MMC Sanitary Inspector Viraj Arabekar said the exercise has been started on an experimental basis with the objective of keeping the three lanes at Sadekar shop, Royal foods and at the Sulabh toilet block free from trash and waste. "We have distributed around 180 bins all along the shops along the Sadekar lane. Shopkeepers need no longer dispose of their waste at the Sadekar lane, but collect the waste and dump into the bins stationed outside their establishment. Municipal workers will dispose of the waste everyday at 3 pm, while the rickshaw will be stationed permanently right in the Sadekar lane for waste collection," Arabekar said.
Replying to a question, he said that this is the first time that the Municipality has embarked on a novel exercise to collect waste generated in the business establishments. "Right now, the Municipality has distributed 180 bins to the business establishments, besides the rickshaw parked at the Sadekar lane. So far, we have been able to maintain cleanliness at the lanes, but the success of the project largely depends on the cooperation from the shop owners and members of the public," he said.
