In a major step towards land ownership rights, as many as 199 residents of Mayem village were given sanads for their houses.
The sanads were handed over to the 199 residents by Speaker Rajesh Patnekar and Mayem MLA Pravin Zantye at a special function on Thursday.
Addressing a gathering, Speaker Patnekar said former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar had made efforts to free the people from the consequences of Portuguese colonial rule, adding that his efforts had now yielded results.
He informed that about 1,500 villagers would also get sanads in the near future, as the State Government was determined to resolve their demands for land
ownership rights.
Mayem MLA Pravin Zantye assured that the State Government would expedite the matter to ensure that locals get land ownership rights.
Others present at the function included Additional Collectors Dasharath Redkar, Gopal Parsekar and R Menaka, Deputy Collectors Sachin Desai and Jyotikumari, Bicholim Mamlatdar Pravinjay Pandit, ex-speaker Anant Shet, Mayem Sarpanch Urvi Masurkar and ZP Shankar Chodankar.
On the occasion, four members of the Mayem Bhuvimochan Nagarik Kruti Samiti Kashinath Mayekar, Harichandra Chari, Yeshwant Karbhatkar and Sakharam Pednekar were felicitated for their efforts to create awareness among locals of Mayem.
