The State Fire Services Department saved nearly 1000 lives and properties valued at Rs 179 crores from fire-related incidents during the fiscal year 2023-24.
Data revealed by Director of Fire & Emergency Services Nitin Raikar states that the department responded to a total of 8000 calls comprising 3000 fire incidents and 5000 emergencies. Their timely intervention led to the rescue of 194 human lives, 757 animal lives, and properties worth Rs. 179 crores were also saved.
Raiker stated that despite these succesful safeguarding, fire incidents continue either due to human error or accidents.
These statistics were unveiled on National Fire Service Day. The Fire Prevention Week will be observed from April 14 to 20 with this year's theme being "Ensure Fire Safety, Contribute towards Nation Building."
"In Goa, various fire safety awareness programs have been organized for the public during Fire Prevention Week. The aim is to educate people so they can assist in saving lives and properties during fire incidents," the director said.
The fire personnel conducted live demonstrations of fire fighting and rescue operations for the public. They also exhibited various equipment related to fire fighting, search & rescue, swift water/flood rescue, medical first responder (MFR), urban search & rescue (USAR), and lighting equipment at the Goa State Fire Force Training Ground.
