Two suspects have been arrested by Old Goa police in connection with the attack on a taxi driver at Malpem-Pernem.

According to Pernem Police Inspector Sachin Lokre, a minor was earlier detained by the Pernem police in this connection.

Pernem police suspect that an inter-state gang from Pune, Kolhapur and Pandharpur areas was involved in the attack of Sanjeev Vengurlekar (65), a taxi driver from Calangute, in Malpem-Pernem on Wednesday night.

According to reports, the accused had hired the taxi driven by Vengurlekar to take them from Calangute to Banda in Sindhudurg-Maharashtra on Wednesday night. As they reached the NH66 highway at Malpem at about 9 pm, the passengers suddenly pounced on Vengurlekar and attacked him with a sharp weapon.

Despite being injured, Vengurlekar resisted the attack, but received multiple injuries, and the accused fled towards Sawantwadi. Vengurlekar is undergoing treatment at the GMC hospital in Bambolim.

A Goa police team went to Sawantwadi in search of the accused. Police from Goa and Sawantwadi suspected that the gang had gone towards Kankavli as a stolen motorcycle was found in the area.
