CANACONA
Late Saturday night, two buffaloes were found dead on the Canacona Bypass (NH66) road in the Tarir area.
Sources say the buffaloes were discovered on the western side of the road. It appears that vehicles travelling from Karwar to Margao hit them. The buffaloes were about 25 metres apart, and pieces of a vehicle’s bumper were found on the roadside, indicating that the vehicle was damaged in the collision.
Residents are increasingly calling for barricades to be placed on both sides of the bypass to prevent cattle from wandering onto the road. They also complain that the construction of the bypass has blocked traditional cattle pathways through paddy fields and khazan lands. They are urging for underpasses to be built so cattle can cross safely.
The lack of street lighting along the 7 km Manohar Parrikar Canacona Bypass Road makes it hard for drivers to see cattle, which can be camouflaged against the road. Better road lighting is needed to prevent such accidents.
