valpoi : The bandh by the mining dependents in Sattari was marred by stray incidents on Tuesday, as two cars were set ablaze and at least two roads were blocked by miscreants at Honda and Pissurlem.
Virtually all shops, hotels and other establishments were also closed on Tuesday, in response to the one-day bandh call by mining dependents demanding early resumption of mining operations in Goa.
Two cars were set ablaze by miscreants, one near the Ajoba Temple at Honda and another at Pissurlem.
According to Valpoi PI Shivram Vaigankar, the cars are likely to have been set ablaze sometime after 3.30 am, since a police control van was deployed near Honda village till 3.30 am and no incident was reported till that time.
So far, no complaint has been lodged regarding both incidents, police said.
The road proceeding towards Sonshi was blocked with mud near the Ajoba Temple, while there was a similar blockade on the road proceeding to Pissurlem.
A rally comprising hundreds of vehicles was staged from Sakhali to Usgao.
Later speaking to reporters, the Goa Mining People’s Front (GMPF) Convenor Puti Gaonkar said the Bandh was very successful in the mining belt.
“People have fully supported the bandh since a halt in mining activity has affected the entire State’s economy,” said Gaonkar.
Sesa Goa Workers Union President Devanand Parab said the people had fully responded to the bandh in Honda and Pissurlem.
“All shops, garages, establishments and other operations in Honda were shut down in support of the bandh. We thank all supporters for successfully observing a bandh in the area,” said Parab.
