Precautionary measures are being taken to ensure that no untoward incident occurs during the Lairai festival of Goddess Lairai, which will be held at Shirgao on April 21.

Addressing a news conference, President of the Lairai Devasthan Committee Dinanath Gaonkar said a total of 92 CCTV cameras have been installed from the ‘Homkhand’ (sacred fire area) to the temple premises, adding that there will be two separate colour codes assigned for the dhonds.

Gaonkar stated that there are no restrictions on devotees attending the Lairai festival. “However, devotees should stand in queues while taking darshan. Everyone must maintain discipline. Children and elderly citizens should be accompanied and must not be left alone in the crowd,” said Gaonkar.

The festival programmes will continue for four days starting from April 22.

Gaonkar further said that after the tragedy during last year’s festival, the government issued guidelines for better preparation and safety.

“These guidelines are being followed by the temple committee. Review meetings have also been conducted through the North Goa District Collector’s office. The Collector, along with officials, has assessed the preparedness. Accordingly, efforts have been made to prevent any untoward incidents during the festival,” he said.

Gaonkar said the Devasthan Committee had appealed that all dhonds participating in the Lairai festival should register themselves.

“Accordingly, more than 20,000 applications have been received. However, some applications are incomplete. So far, identity cards have been issued to more than 7,000 dhonds. Those who have not applied will not be allowed to participate in the festival,” said Gaonkar.

Office bearers of the Devasthan Committee were present on the occasion.
