In a bid to cap the bitter row over the question of setting up a manned waste collection centre near the bus stand, Cuncolim Municipal Council Chairperson Polita Carneiro and Councilor Mario Moraes on Tuesday impressed upon Chief Officer Shankar Gaonkar not to go ahead with
the move.
The Chairperson and the Councilor, however, suggested two alternate sites to the Chief Officer at Maddicotto and along the Cuncolim Industrial Estate road to set up the manned waste collection centre.
After the meeting, Mario said the Chief officer was convinced that the two alternate sites could be positively considered for the manned waste collection centres. "The Chief Officer assured the Chairperson that he would write to the Sewage Corporation not to go ahead with the bus stand centre, but to examine the alternate sites at Maddicotto and the Industrial estate," Mario said.
He hoped that the controversy kicked up by the decision to set up the manned collection centre at the bus stand will end now with the councillors suggesting alternate sites.
The CMC was in the eye of a storm a fortnight ago after the Chief Officer told the media that a decision has been taken to accept waste from the neighbouring villages, a move which drew widespread criticism from the citizens, questioning the proprietary of accepting waste from other villages when the council's waste treatment site is lying in doldrums.
Meanwhile, the CMC has questioned the national highway officials for the delay in lifting the waste from the dry waste dumping centre along the NH-17, meters away from the NUSI hospital.
The municipality told the highway officials that the dry waste cetnre has become an eyesore along the NH-17 and called for the day-to-day lifting of the waste with immediate effect.
