In a joint raid conducted by Colvale Police and officials of the departments of mines and captain of ports, two persons were arrested for illegal sand extraction in river Chapora at Pirna on Tuesday morning.
The alleged accused, Dadan Sahani (50) and Ajay Sahani (42) both natives of Uttar Pradesh, were arrested and the canoe they used to extract sand was also seized.
Acting on specific information, Mamlatdar of Bardez Dasharath Gawas along with officials of departments of mines and minerals, captain of port and Colvale Police conducted a raid at Pirna in the wee hours and found two persons illegally extracting sand in Chapora river.
Based on a complaint filed by Shyam Sawant, Assistant Geologist of Mines and Mineral Department a case was registered against the duo for committing theft of sand under Section 379 r/w 34 IPC and for contravention of rule 3 and 38 with rule 62(1) of the Goa Minor Minerals concession rule 1985.
Both were later arrested and the canoe used in the illegal activity was also seized.
A total of 8.5 cubic metres of sand worth Rs 11,050 was also seized.
Colvale Police are investigating further.
