224 MMC daily wage workers yet to be paid Sept wages

MARGAO

Even as the Margao Municipal Council is facing a manpower crunch after the labour contractor abandoned work on the door-to-door waste collection, MMC’s daily wage workers, around 224 workers to be precise, have been left high and dry for want of wage payments.

In fact, these daily wage workers, engaged by various Municipal sections, had to go without wages for the month of September for no fault of theirs. When a group of daily wage workers came to question the officials over their delayed payment, they were only told that they will soon receive their payments, without realising that already 10 days of the current month had elapsed since yesterday.

The Goan understands that these 224 daily wage workers will have to wait till next week to receive their daily wages for the simple reasons that the file is still being processed by the civic body. Friday saw the file coming to the Accounts section only at noon, but the staff ensured that the file was cleared within minutes before it was sent to the office of the Chief Officer for signatures.

It was only late Friday that the file was cleared in all respects, but given that the civic body will remain closed during the weekend, the workers can now hope to receive their September wages only around mid-October.

This is not the first time that the MMC daily wage workers had to wait for their wages for the simple reason that the various sections delayed in submitting the details of the workers to the accounts section on time.
