The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has identified around 25 institutions in the municipality as bulk waste generators.

According to MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes, the institutions identified could generate around 100 kgs of waste in a day.

Fernandes said notices have been issued to the institutions and they have been given a time frame of 20 days to reply to MMC, failing which they will be taken as bulk waste generators and new rules would be implied upon them.

“As per rules of Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, all local bodies are directed for compliance and we are doing our best. But there are some institutions that are creating more garbage and we have found that they are creating as much as 100 kgs per day.”

“This is an issue where they have to tackle on their own. Now we have identified 25 such institutions and we have issued notices to them as to why they should not be listed in the category of bulk generator of waste.”

“They have been given 20 days to respond to our notice and if they don’t respond in stipulated time, they will be considered in the category of bulk waste generators and accordingly, new rules will implemented on them,” said Fernandes.

The chief officer said if the 25 institutions claim they do not generate 100 kgs of waste, they would have to respond to the MMC and seek that they be de-listed from the category of bulk waste generators.

“We have every power to de-list them, but they have to justify the reason and we will also check whether they are right in their undertaking. If they are found to generate over 100 kgs of waste, they will be compelled to act on their own, segregate waste on their own and do the entire garbage disposal exercise without giving the garbage to MMC,” added Fernandes.
