Canacona police on Monday registered an FIR against three activists on charges of stopping an interstate fish-laden vehicle at Canacona on Saturday.

According to reports, Canacona police booked Sandesh Telekar and two others on charges of forcibly stopping an interstate fish-laden vehicle at Nagarcem on Saturday. The said fish laden vehicle was allegedly escorted by Canacona police from the Polem border.

Sources said Telekar and two other activists on Saturday had stopped the vehicle and had sought clarification from the driver regarding details on the nature and destination of the consignment.

The driver then reportedly showed a receipt of fish being transported to a fish processing unit in Goa. The activists then questioned the need for police protection to a fish-laden van. It is learnt that activists, who had recently exposed the inadequate FDA checks for formalin at the Polem check post, were reportedly keeping a close tab on the fish vans. Several people from Canacona visited the police station and demanded details in the matter.
