Three women were rescued when they were stranded on the flooded bridge at Madhlawada-Sancorda, as heavy rains lashed Ponda and Dharbandora taluka on Monday.
According to sources, the three women were proceeding on a two-wheeler at around 4 pm on Monday. There was a sudden rise in level of the Ragada river and one side of the bridge got flooded, making it difficult for them to proceed further.
Locals alerted Collem police that the three women were stranded on the bridge.
A Collem police team and a fire brigade led by Ajit Kamat and Sushil Morjakar from the Ponda fire station rushed to the site and with the help of local youth, the firefighters managed to rescue the stranded women.
Meanwhile, traffic was affected due to waterlogging of many roads in the area.
The heavy rains also severely affected shopping ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi as many people did not visit the markets and preferred to remain indoors.
