301 candidates in fray, 31 pull out on the last day

With the withdrawal of 31 nominations on Monday, 301 candidates will contest elections to 40 constituencies in the State on February 14.

Siolim constituency has maximum number of candidates (13) followed by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s constituency of Sanquelim with 12 candidates. 

The constituencies with the least number of candidates are five each in Margao, Benaulim, Porvorim, Bicholim and St Cruz.

The stronger presence of some new parties in the political battle has led to an increase in candidates (301) in the 2022 elections, as opposed to 250 candidates in the 2017 assembly elections.

The 301 candidates contesting the polls are in Mandrem (9), Calangute (7), Pernem (9), Bicholim (5), Tivim (7), Mapusa (8), Siolim (13), Saligao (6), Porvorim (5), Aldona (6), Panaji (7), Taleigao (8), St Cruz (5), St Andre (7), Cumbharjua (7), Mayem (9), Sanquelim (12), Poriem (7), Valpoi (8), Priol (8), Ponda (7), Shiroda (8), Marcaim (8), Mormugao (8), Vasco (9), Dabolim (7), Cortalim (9), Nuvem (7), Curtorim (8), Fatorda (6), Margao (5), Benaulim (5), Navelim (9), Cuncolim (10), Velim (6), Quepem (7), Curchorem (6), Sanvordem (7), Sanguem (8) and Canacona (8).
