As many as 447 of the 613 trees have been felled so far as part of ongoing construction of Porvorim’s elevated corridor.

Rajendra Singh Bamboo Infra Pvt Ltd (RSBIPL) made a presentation of the ongoing work of NH-66 elevated six-lane corridor at Socorro Panchayat hall on Wednesday, which was arranged by the Socorro panchayat.

On behalf of RSBIPL, Rajdeep Bhatacharya made a presentation and Bhanwar Meena assisted him.

Bhattarcharya mentioned that work on the Porvorim elevated six-lane corridor is going on speedily and the project will be completed in the last quarter of 2025.

“As of December 9, 290 of the 530 piles have been completed. Similarly, work on 25 of the 88 piers has been completed and 112 of the 1,431 total segments (casting) have been completed. Of the 613 trees, 447 trees have so far been felled,” said Bhattarcharya.

Bhatacharya further mentioned that the six-lane corridor will land near Majestic Hotel and 300-400 metres away from the Atal Setu. Residents of Porvorim and nearby areas will have come to Majestic hotel if they want to go through the flyover corridor.

While putting forth his comnents, Dr M B Prabhu mentioned that the flyover corridor should have joined the Atal Setu instead of making it land near Majestic Hotel.

“There will be chaos near the Majestic Hotel, resulting in a traffic jam,” said Dr Prabhu.

Social activist Soter D’Souza said there are several showrooms of vehicles along the Socorro–Porvorim stretch of the highway. “Trucks carrying these vehicles will not use the Porvorim elevated corridor but will ply on the existing road only. So, the movement of heavy traffic will not be reduced. This elevated flyover is made for the benefit of the real estate and logistic hub, instead of Porvorim residents,” said D’Souza.

The issue of dust pollution was also discussed during this presentation.

Residents of Socorro and Porvorim mentioned that their lives have become miserable due to dust pollution. Though water is sprinkled on the road by the PWD, dust pollution has not reduced, they claimed.

Bhattacharya admitted that there is dust pollution and said they are taking necessary steps to reduced it.

“Three-four water tankers are being used daily to sprinkle water on the road. But the water that is sprinkled dries soon and the dust accumulates again. We will try to increase the frequency of water tankers so that the dust pollution is minimised,” said Bhatacharya.

Bhattacharya mentioned that once the work of elevated corridor is completed, there will be two service roads on either of the pillars for smooth movement of traffic and added that this flyover will last for another 75-100 years.

Awarded to Rajasthan-based Rajendra Singh Bamboo Infra Pvt Ltd (RSBIPL) with a bid of Rs 386 crore, the project cost includes shifting utilities, consultant fees, and other contingencies.

Once completed, the elevated corridor is expected to streamline the flow of traffic through Porvorim, significantly reducing congestion and enhancing the travel experience for commuters.
