A 46-year-old resident of Old Goa, Kamlakant Kankonkar, was seriously injured after a Pondicherry registered bus hit the motorcycle he was riding, near Hat Khatro Khambo junction at Old Goa on Sunday night.
According to another local resident who was present at the time of the mishap, Kankonkar was trying to cross the road when the bus, going from Panaji towards Ponda, hit his motorcycle and as a result, Kankonkar was seriously injured. He was later shifted to Goa Medical College (GMC) at Bambolim in an 108 Ambulance and is undergoing treatment.
Residents have, however, blamed the haphazard road widening works undertaken at the junction which has become a death trap to the locals seeking to cross from one side to the other.
“There is a need to post traffic police throughout day and night to prevent such types of mishaps. Otherwise traffic signals or speed breakers need to be installed as vehicles are often speeding resulting in many accidents,” said a local resident, while warning that if these demands are not fulfilled within a week then the locals would be forced to block the road in protest.
