Day one of Goa Police’s week-long offensive against drunken driving across the state saw around 50 drivers being challaned for the violation. A process has also been initiated to suspend these licenses.

“Due to Carnival and other events, there was an increase in the number of road accidents reported and that  is why we have initiated this drive, said DySp (Traffic) Dharmesh Angle, adding, “From tomorrow onwards the drive will  be made massive.”

The men in uniform adorning fluorescent belts, flashing batons and  equipped with alcometers were seen checking almost every vehicle passing by their checkpoints and  issuing challans to the violators.

This is the first drive initiated by the Goa Police after DGP Muktesh Chander was transferred to Delhi.

When DGP Muktesh Chander was the DGP of Goa, he had initiated a massive drive against drunken driving in the state in a bid to curb the number of road fatalities on account of drunk drivers.

During these drives hundreds of drunken driving cases were registered everyday as teams of policemen descended on to the streets at different locations between 7 pm and 10 pm in the evening.
