MARGAO
Government's plan to tone up manpower requirements and logistics at the hospitals has hit a big block with hardly any doctors evincing interest in joining the health department in times of pandemic.
This became evident on Wednesday when only five doctors turned up for the 50 posts that were up for grabs.
The Director of Health services had advertised 50 posts of doctors and the interviews were scheduled on Wednesday.
Sources in the know informed that the Director of Health services will have no option than to call for the interviews again as the shortage of doctors have overstretched the system.
In fact, when Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the South Goa district hospital on Wednesday morning, hopes were raised amongst the doctors manning the district hospital that the hospital will receive additional doctors as and when doctors who turn up for the interview on Wednesday assume duties.
That's not all. Hospitals such as the South Goa district hospital are facing a crunch of Health care workers including doctors and nurses. The doctor ratio at the South Goa district hospital has fallen drastically with the hospital playing host to 500-odd patients.
Similarly, plans by the ESI hospital to start ICU facility has been postponed for want of doctors, including specialists such as anesthetics.
