The Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce at Quepem has been ranked 53rd in national ranking of Colleges conducted by Human Resources Ministry of 535 colleges in the country.
Union Human Resource and Development Minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday released the Indian rankings 2017, which have been based on 20 different parameters. Regional diversity, gender equity, inclusion of disadvantaged sections were among some of the specific parameters in the India Rankings 2017.
Javadekar said the rankings were meant to provide guidance to both parents and students by enabling them to know about the quality of institutes and take better decisions.
The honour accorded to the Quepem Government College as Goa’s best ranked college has been hailed in Quepem.
Speaking to The Goan, Quepem Government College Principal Bhaskar Nayak said it was a great achievement and moment of celebration for all those associated with the college.
“The credit for such an impressive achievement should go to students as well as teaching and non-teaching faculty of the college, as it is not easy to reach the 53rd position in the entire country,” said a jubilant Nayak,
who also had a word of praise for vice-principal, Ashok Mangutkar, for his efforts in managing the college as acting principal.
Quepem Municipal Council Chairperson Raul Pereira praised the Quepem college for obtaining the 53rd rank, which is the highest among colleges in Goa.
“I am proud of this achievement and it is a dream come true. That a government run college in a rural region of the State to have achieved such a high rank among colleges all over the country is a matter of great pride for all
Quepekars.”
“I congratulate all the staff and students for this success,” said Pereira. Despite efforts, Opposition leader and Quepem MLA Kavlekar was unavailable for comments.
The Quepem government college began with only the arts and commerce streams from the temporary premises at the Xeldem sub-station of the electricity department, to admit 100 students in June 1989.
The college got its own premises in 1992 and the science stream was added in 1993, followed by the Department of Computer Science in 1994.
The Post Graduate Department of Commerce & Research in Quepem government college started in 2012 to develop postgraduate and research level programmes for professional manpower requirements.
The college currently caters to the needs of over 1200 students from both under graduate and post graduate streams.
The Quepem government college was awarded A Grade by NAAC in March 2016, making it the third A-grade college and first among government colleges in the State.
