Six mobile phones and the remains of two other handsets were recovered during a joint security operation by prison administration and police at the Central Jail, Colvale, on Friday. The search was conducted as part of a security and sensitisation exercise under supervision of Inspector General of Prisons. Jail officials and police searched four blocks housing convicts, undertrial prisoners and inmates in high-security section.
The phones recovered included Nokia feature phones, a Jio phone and Android smartphones. The remains of two dismantled handsets were also found. The operation follows a recent alleged attempt to smuggle contraband into the jail involving a female security guard. Prison authorities have since stepped up surveillance and tightened measures to prevent banned items from entering the premises. The recovery highlights the continuing challenge of preventing mobile phones and other prohibited items from reaching inmates despite regular security checks.
