Amid Congress’ call to rethink alliance discussions for the 2027 Assembly elections, the Goa Forward Party (GFP) on Friday indicated that public sentiment was against another tie-up with the national party, citing fears of post-poll defections.
GFP chief Vijai Sardesai said there was little benefit for his party in reviving the alliance, maintaining that its position remained unchanged. “There is a general sentiment that the alliance would primarily benefit Congress in its bid for a third consecutive hat-trick of defections. Our party gets no benefit from it. There is no point in an alliance. Our stand is the same for now,” Sardesai said.
He said GFP was allied with Congress during the 2022-27 term and would decide its political course after the present term. “The alliance talks are suspended, and they remain suspended. There is no point in talking about alliance. If we reconsider, I will tell you. Or if we are to take on a new alliance partner, we will inform you, but there is nothing of the sort right now,” he said.
Sardesai said any decision to revive the talks would be taken by the party.
Meanwhile, GFP announced preparations for the 2027 elections in five Kushavati constituencies. It will launch its ‘Jany Gaon, Thany Havn’ campaign on Saturday, beginning in Sanvordem.
Cong talks underway, full alliance dialogue after restructuring: RGP
PANAJI: Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) national president Viresh Borkar said discussions with Congress were underway, but a full-fledged dialogue on a common minimum programme and seat-sharing would begin after the party completed its organisational restructuring.
“Congress chief had called me and the alliance discussions are currently underway. When we talk about an alliance, there has to be a common minimum programme, seat-sharing discussions and many other things. Nothing is finalised overnight; it takes time,” Borkar said.
He said he would discuss the alliance proposal with party leaders once the restructuring of the RGP organisation was completed. “There is no internal politics in RGP, but we are restructuring it. Our aim is to protect Goa,” Borkar said.
