Six vehicles were involved in a freak mishap, after they were caught unawares by a speeding VIP motorcade along the NH-17, opposite the Holy Cross Shrine at Bambolim on Thursday evening.
Speaking to The Goan, an eyewitness said the incident took place at about 6 pm when the VIP motorcade was speeding towards Agassaim.
“The VIP motorcade was speeding on the middle of the road to avoid both traffic lanes. A rickshaw proceeding towards Panaji was trying to overtake a vehicle, when the driver suddenly noticed the oncoming VIP motorcade,” said the eyewitness, who declined to be named.
“The rickshaw driver slammed the brake, but a motorcycle trailing the rickshaw was unable to stop in time and rammed into the rear of the rickshaw.”
“A silver Wagon R car trailing the motorcycle jammed the brakes and avoided colliding with the motorcycle, and a Ritz car following the Wagon R also successfully averted the collision. However, an Eeco car rammed into the rear end of the Ritz car and another car rammed into the rear of the Eeco car. A seventh vehicle then collided into the sixth vehicle,” the eyewitness added.
There was a traffic jam for some time on account of the chain collision of vehicles and a police vehicle went to the site to restore traffic along the busy highway.
When contacted, Agassaim Police Inspector Jivba Dalvi confirmed the road mishap involving multiple vehicles.
“However, the police did not register any case as the vehicle owners settled the matter among themselves,” said PI Dalvi.
