60-day fishing ban from June 1

The Department of Fisheries has in a notification issued the 60-day fishing ban to begin from June 1 to July 31.

Making the announcement, Fisheries director Shamila Monteiro in the notification citing sub-section (1) and (2) of Section 4 of the Goa, Daman and Diu Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1980 (Act No. 3 of 1981) said motorized canoes with 10 HP capacity would still be allowed.   
“The Government of Goa having regard to the need to conserve fish, hereby prohibits fishing by fishing vessels fitted with mechanical means of propulsion and by means of trawl-net and purse-seine net, except fishing by registered motorized canoes using gill nets only, and fitted with outboard or inboard motors, of upto 10 HP capacity, as a means of propulsion, along the sea coast of the State of Goa and the territorial waters of the State of Goa, with effect from 1st June, 2017 till 31st July, 2017 (both days inclusive),” she said in the notification.

Cigarettes seized in police raids

A team of a Mumbai-based cigarette company, along with local police, conducted raids by invoking provision of COTPA Act at some shops along the costal belt in Salcete and seized spurious cigarettes worth around Rs 1.95 lakh.

MARGAO According to Colva police, the team of Mumbai-based company arrived in Goa and conducted raids based on specific information it sourced regarding the sale of spurious/duplicate cigarettes sold under the company’s brand name along the coastal belt. In the first such raid conducted at a shop in Varca on Thursday, the company’s team, together with Colva police, seized spurious/duplicate cigarettes worth Rs 95,000 which were sold under the company’s brand name.…
