A 63-year-old Mumbai man was found dead in a decomposed state inside a flat at Dona Alcina Estate, Candolim, on Friday, after a foul smell emanating from the premises alerted a local resident.
The deceased was identified as Cornello Joseph Britto, a resident of Veronica Street, Bandra (West), Mumbai. He had arrived in Goa on September 27 to attend inventory proceedings.
According to Calangute police, they received telephonic information from Domnic Britto, a resident of Corlim, at around 11.50 am on October 9, reporting a foul smell coming from flat A12-1 at Dona Alcina Estate, with the main door locked from inside.
Police personnel, with the assistance of fire station staff, forced open the door and found Britto's body lying near the toilet in the bathroom.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that Britto had stopped responding to phone calls from family members since October 5. His cousin subsequently visited the flat to check on him, leading to the discovery.
Police said no foul play was suspected at this stage. A scene-of-occurrence panchanama and an inquest panchanama were conducted, and arrangements were made to preserve the body for a post-mortem examination.
Calangute police have registered an unnatural death case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.
PSI Yogesh Mandrekar is conducting further inquiries.
