CANACONA
In yet another release of turtle hatchlings of the season in Canacona, around 87 Olive Ridley hatchlings were released into the sea from the Galgibaga Turtle Rehabilitation Centre on Wednesday night.
The forest department engaged personnel collected the 87 hatchlings from Pit 5 (16 hatchlings) and Pit 6 (71 hatchlings) at about 9 pm on Wednesday night. More Olive Ridley hatchlings are expected from the two pits later in the night and early Thursday, the sources said.
It may be recalled that a total of 14 pits are protected at the Galgibaga Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, which is also the Headquarters of the newly formed South Goa Marine Range.
Sources further informed some more hatchlings are also expected from the Pits 2, 3 and 4 in the days to come.
Incidentally, the Canacona coast is home to 44 pits in Agonda and 14 pits in Galgibaga. Over 70 hatchlings were already released from the season’s first pit at Galgibaga a fortnight ago.
