Residents in Uguem have requested authorities to repair the broken laterite structure around the lake, which serves as a source of agricultural water supply to farmers who have paddy fields in the locality.Earlier, when there was no tap water supply in the village, villagers residing nearby would use water from lake for drinking and other domestic purposes.
As the lake still continues to run in full flow, residents have requested authorities to repair the broken laterite structure and to also clean the lake as lot of foliage has begun to clog the lake.
“The existing laterite structure was constructed during the Portuguese regime. With the passage of time and with no maintenance, the laterite structure has given way and needs repairs, failing which there could be an adverse effect on the flow of the lake,” said a villager, Milton Dias.
“The government has recently rejuvenated and repaired several lakes and springs in the State through funds allotted by the central government. Work to repair and develop the Uguem lake could be undertaken under the central government sponsored scheme,” he added.
Residents have, however, requested authorities to limit the development work to the extent of cleaning and restoration work of the concrete structure and to avoid construction of any motorable access to the lake, to avoid nuisance by miscreants at such water bodies which have easy access to vehicles.
