A month later, South dist Covid hospital remains underutilised

MARGAO
Around 70 patients, including 13 on oxygen and 80 vacant beds. That was the situation at the 150-bedded South Goa district hospital on Monday, one month since it was designated as a Covid hospital on September 19.

Since it was notified for Covid work a month ago, the hospital had admitted around 359 patients. While 240 patients were later discharged from the hospital, around 46 were shifted out.

Around 1025 patients were treated at the district hospital over the last one month.

Manned by nodal officers, Dr Rajesh Patil and Dr Sunanda Amonkar along with Hospicio Medical Superintendent, Dr Deepa Correia Afonso, the district hospital can accommodate 250 patients at a time, but the present capacity is pegged at 150 beds.

When the state had witnessed a spike in cases last month, the government had announced the increase in bed capacity to 350 to meet the requirements.

However, with the number of cases on the decline over the last fortnight, one has seen vacant beds in the district hospital.

It was only on Thursday last that around 115 of the total 150 beds were occupied by patients. The figure, however, came down to 70 on Monday, of which 13 patients are on oxygen.

The long-delayed South Goa district hospital was commissioned a couple of months ago by shifting the OPD services from Hospicio hospital. Days later, Hospicio had shifted the male and female medicine wards to the new district hospital.

Both the OPDs and the male and female medicine wards were later shifted back to Hospicio after the government decided to notify the district hospital for Covid treatment.
