MARGAO: In a gruesome murder, a 26-year-old lad, Liston Colaco, from Mandopa-Navelim was stabbed to death on Tuesday night near the canal at Dramapur by accused Francisco Fernandes, a resident of Dramapur.
Liston, who had come down from Dubai last month, was scheduled to leave for the Gulf country, next week.
Accused Franciso has since been arrested by the Margao police and has been booked for murder. While the accused has been remanded to seven days police custody, the police are on the job to recover the knife used to murder the victim.
Addressing the media, Margao police station in-charge, PI Kapil Nayak informed that the incident occurred on the kacha (unmetalled) road next to the canal at Dramapur following an altercation between the accused and the deceased. He pointed out that the accused, aged between 45-50 years, is a resident of St Minguel Waddo-Dramapur and stays around 500 meters away from the canal. “After he heard some noise, the accused is reported to have gone to the banks of the canal, where the deceased and his friends were sitting. A quarrel ensued between the accused and the deceased and his friends, following which the accused allegedly stabbed Liston on the left side of his stomach, which proved fatal.
PI Kapil said the murder took place following a sudden quarrel between the accused and the deceased, resulting in the murder, while ruling out any personal enmity as the cause behind the murder.
Police said that Liston’s friends rushed him to the Hospicio hospital, the deceased was brought dead to the hospital, PI Kapil added.
