While the state commemorated Goa Revolution day at the state capital and the historic Lohia Maidan, Margao on Tuesday, a delegation of Aam Admi Party (AAP) led by state convenor Elvis Gomes visited the statue of Floriano Vaz, the first Konkani martyr who was killed in police firing during the 1986 Konkani language agitation.
Recalling the shooting down of Florian Vaz at the hands of the congress government, Elvis, who along with party volunteers visited the statue of Vaz at Gogol-Margao said that many have forgotten or are unaware that Vaz was an innocent victim of being part of an agitation which he said was in itself a revolution.
He said that Revolution Day was observed by performing rituals of symbolic garlanding or placing of wreaths while forgetting that the revolution was meant to give freedom and voice to the people.
“His voice was silenced forever when he was shot in cold blood by government forces during the then Congress government. He is forgotten and so is the revolution. But the politicians involved are still holding on to power 33 years later proving it to be a misdirected revolution for selfish interests. Revolution should have given greater freedom of speech rather than subduing people in fear of victimisation,” Elvis said.
He called upon volunteers to reignite revolution to be a part of daily existence and said that revolution when it happens in the field of education, health and employment as it has happened with AAP Government in Delhi, will usher in the true meaning of revolution.
He also said that the state was headed towards crisis of unprecedented magnitude in various sectors such as environmental pollution, water and pressure on land and to prevent that all will have to be prepared for another revolution.
AAP leader Sidharth Karapurkar also spoke on the occasion.
