Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai on Tuesday called for a clean, green and friendly revolution in the state as he sought cooperation of the people of Goa to take the state forward.

Taking the platform of the Goa Revolution Day celebrations at the historic Lohia Maidan after paying homage to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia and the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for Goa’s liberation, Sardesai also paid rich tributes to Dr Juliao Menezes for inviting Dr Lohia at his Assolna residence before they descended at Margao to call for the ouster of the Portuguese regime.

Underlining the need for a clean revolution to tide over the burning garbage issue plaguing the state, Sardesai said the government is committed to give a push for a green revolution by getting a Legislation on contract farming to bring fallow land under cultivation. The friendly revolution is required to ensure that the state retains its hospitable character, which is the prime reason attracting tourists and visitors to the state.

“Goa’s track record is impressive despite missing the two five-year plans. But, since we are a new state, we face many challenges and people should join hands with the government to overcome the endemic issues facing the state,” he said.

Citing the case of the Sonsodo dump, which has been existing since his childhood, Sardesai said a clean revolution will not only solve the dump, but would help tide over the waste issues plaguing the state.

Stressing on the need to shed the cynical attitude amongst the young lot that things will not move forward, the deputy Chief Minister reminded that the Liberation of Goa after a long-drawn struggle as he called upon the younger generation to boldly faces the challenges coming their way.

On the occasion, Sardesai assured the freedom fighters that Lohia Maidan will receive a befitting face lit by next year, saying GSUDA will tender a Rs 2.80 crore beautification project later this week.

In his brief address, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat recalled the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters and the flame that was lit by Dr Ram Manohar Lohia that culminated in Goa attaining Liberation in 1961.

He called for introspection amongst the people whether Goa is moving in the right direction as was visualized by the freedom fighters during the freedom movement.
