MARGAO
Overflowing bins and waste piled up along roadsides came to haunt the Margao Municipal Council for the third day as the civic body literally struggled to clear the mounds of waste from the city on Wednesday.
Incidentally, the Margao civic body resorted to open dumping of waste at the existing dump yard with the waste treatment plant choked by waste rejects and the commercial capital hit by stench.
While municipal garbage trucks began lifting mounds of waste from the city markets, including wholesale and retail, since Tuesday evening, daily wage workers engaged for door-to-door waste collection made their presence felt at the residential buildings only on Wednesday evening, collecting stinking waste that had accumulated for the last two days.
It appeared that the task before the civic body was not to segregate the tonnes of waste generated, but to lift away the mixed waste to the existing dump yard and rid the city of the stink.
Given that the waste treatment plant did not accept mixed waste for the last three days, the MMC workers had a task cut out to clear the mounds of waste awaiting clearance from the transfer stations and the markets. It is evident from the manner in which the civic workers are going about the work, that the primary task before the municipality is to clear the piling garbage from the city and transport the same to the existing Sonsodo dump.
Acting Margao Municipal Chairperson Tito Cardozo, who personally monitored the waste collection in the city, with Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai proceeding on leave, said the situation is slowly, but definitely returning to normal. “Things should hopefully return to normal within a day as work on lifting away the waste rejects from the waste treatment plant is going on in full swing,” Tito said.
Saying that municipal workers have been given clear instructions to segregate as much waste as possible, Tito exuded confidence that the situation would improve in the next two-three days.
MMC workers engaged in waste collection complained that even as they were struggling to clear the piled up waste across the city, fresh waste continued to find its way into the city from the neighbouring villages, making matter worse for them.
