MARGAO: Even as the MMC workers were engaged in carting away the waste rejects from the waste treatment plan to the existing dump, fire came to haunt the authorities on Wednesday evening once again.
Margao fire brigade rushed to Sonsodo at 5.30 pm on Wednesday following a call that fire has resurfaced on the dump. A team of fire-fighting team headed by leading fireman Sanjay Desai immediately doused the fire by spraying water and requested the MMC engineers to cover the area with mud. Desai told The Goan that the fire was extinguished with the help of water, but maintained that since there was a possibility of the fire recurring at the same place, the civic body has been told to cap the site with mud. Sources said that though it’s been a fortnight since a joint operation capped the fire emanating from the Sonsodo site, fire continues to recur aided by the methane gas underneath.
