Day two of the ongoing operation to cart away the waste rejects from Fomento’s waste treatment plant entered the second day on Wednesday, with the Margao civic body managing to lift away around 400 tonnes of waste in the last two days.

However, it may take at least two more days for the civic body to clear the waste treatment plant from the rejects as an estimated 600 tonnes of rejects are still awaiting clearance by the municipality.

The operation to cart away the waste rejects, which started on Tuesday noon following the visit to the Sonsodo site by Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai, gathered pace on Wednesday with the civic body roping in Dilip Buildcon’s trucks to expedite the exercise and free the plant of the waste rejects.

Fomento official Sudin Pai Raiturkar told The Goan that the municipality had carted away around 120 tonnes on Tuesday and another 300 tonnes on Wednesday. “We have extended all cooperation to the civic body by making available our machinery to load the trucks. Around 600 tonnes of the waste rejects are still inside the plant and the operation by the civic body is expected to resume on Thursday morning,” he added.

Acting MMC Chairperson Tito Cardozo said while the civic body had pressed additional trucks to lift away the rejects from the plant to the existing dump, the operation slowed down a bit because of the slippery conditions on the dump. “Our focus is to clear the dump yard of all the rejects by Thursday so that segregated waste is accepted by the concessionaire inside the plant at the earliest and ease the waste collection and transportation situation in the city,” Tito added.
