GOACAN has raised concerns over an abandoned under-construction multi-storey building for the Quepem Police Station being a potential health hazard, while the Quepem PHC Health Officer has fixed a joint site inspection.
In a letter dated July 15 to the Health Officer, Quepem Primary Health Centre, GOACAN pointed out that an abandoned under-construction multi-storey building for a police station at Quepem was turning into a potential health hazard.
The GOACAN letter stated that "the abandoned building, not being maintained by the concerned contractor, has resulted in plants growing on the construction site, it becoming a refuge for snakes and, due to the rains, it has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. It may be noted that since this construction is for a Goa Government-approved project, it is all the more important that the necessary rules and SOPs are followed."
In its letter, GOACAN called on the PHC Health Officer to undertake a site inspection to verify the present status of the building; issue a notice to the project agency and site contractor as required under the Goa Public Health Act, 1985, and Rules, 1987; and ensure that the contractor displays the mandatory signage giving details of the permissions granted for construction.
Taking cognisance of the GOACAN letter, Dr Socorro Quadros, Health Officer, PHC Quepem, has fixed a joint site inspection on Wednesday, July 22, involving the QMC, PWD and the Police Inspector of Quepem Police Station.
