Mapusa People’s Union (MPU), vice-president, Sudesh Tivrekar on Friday said a number of illegal constructions have sprouted in Mapusa even as the council was turning a blind eye to illegal activities.

He said absence of full-time Chief Officer (CO) has encouraged some individuals to indulge in illegalities and urged the government to give priority in the appointment of a CO in Mapusa.
“The absence of regular chief officer has given rise to a number of illegalities in Mapusa. We appeal to the government to immediately appoint a full-time chief officer in Mapusa civic body,” Tivrekar said.
According to MPU, a Mapusa-based organization, a number of illegal constructions and hill-cutting was going on in Ward 16 in Khorlim-Mapusa.
In a complaint to the Mapusa Municipal Council, MPU secretary, Jawaharlal Shetye has said that several under constructions were going on in Ward 16.
“While some construction companies have failed to display the mandatory signboards with details of construction, at least at one site hill cutting was going on,” Shetye said in his complaint.
Based on the complaint, the staff of the municipal council’s engineering department conducted an inquiry at the site on Friday.
However, Municipal Engineer, Hussain Shah Muzawar made light work of the complaint stating that there was not much substance in the complaint.
“A local from the area was issued a show cause notice for some repair work abutting his house. That is why a department engineer had gone for the inspection of the site,” Muzawar said.
Local councillor, Vibha Salgaonkar said there were no illegal constructions going on in her ward.
“The ongoing construction projects that are going on in my ward have valid permissions from MMC and other departments,” Salgaonkar said.
However, the MPU secretary said the constructions were violating the building by-laws and requested the civic body to initiate appropriate action as per the Municipal Act and building by-laws.
