Sunday morning proved fatal for the elderly Sawant couple at Campal when they were returning home after their morning walk.
The couple residing at Campal, were knocked down by a speeding jeep along the DB Marg near the demolished football stadium at Campal. They were on their bike riding back home after their morning walk at around 6.45 am.
The husband Maruti Sawant (69) died while being treated at the Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim.
His wife Pushpa Sawant (62) who was writhing in pain lying on the road, was first taken to Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim where she was found to be critically injured with multiple fractures.
After preliminary treatment she was later shifted to Manipal hospital in Dona Paula for surgery.
Panaji police have booked a case of rash and negligent driving against the driver of the jeep Amar Bernard (22) and are conducting further investigations.
It was a head-on collision as the Sawants were riding from Miramar to Campal and the jeep was driving in the opposite direction.
Police sources said, Bernard who was driving the jeep lost control and collided head-on with the scooter ridden by the Sawants.
Bernard has been booked under sections 279, 338 and 304A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
According to neighbours, Maruti was a former employee of the tyre company MRF.
