Aldona MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira announced on Sunday that the government has given the green light for the installation of AI-controlled traffic signals at Peddem junction.
Ferreira emphasized the importance of this initiative, citing Peddem junction’s high rate of accidents as a priority concern. The traffic signals, equipped with cameras, will be sourced from Chennai.
“I’m delighted to share that our proposal for a traffic signal at Peddem junction has been sanctioned,” Ferreira stated.
“Given its status as a notorious accident hotspot, the installation of this signal is paramount. The procurement process for the AI-controlled signal and cameras from Chennai is underway. While the installation is slated to take place within two months, I’ve urged authorities to expedite the process by staggering the delivery of equipment. My team and I are closely monitoring the progress to ensure prompt installation,” he added.
Ferreira also pledged to address the synchronization of all signals at the junction once the new system is operational.
He raised concerns about motorists speeding due to the reduced height of rumbler strips and called for stricter enforcement measures.
“In addition to the traffic signal, speed breakers will soon be erected on the service road from Caraswaddo,” Ferreira revealed.
He also disclosed that the government has accepted his longstanding proposal for a flyover/underpass, with a consultant tasked to develop the plan.
“While immediate action will be taken on the signal and speed breakers, the flyover/underpass project will undergo a more extensive planning phase,” he explained.
Ferreira addressed another pressing issue”the non-functional streetlights at the junction, which have now been resolved after two months of inactivity.
