Accident prone zone? 79-year-old pillion rider dies in Navelim mishap

A 79-year-old pillion rider lost her life in a road accident on the western bypass after the two-wheeler on which she was travelling met with an accident on Friday morning.

While the pillion rider, Ana Joaquina Pires e Andrade, a resident of Fradilem-Navelim succumbed to her injuries at the South Goa district hospital, the scooter rider Manuel Custodio Pires, aged 54-year sustained injuries and has been shifted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim. An occupant of the Maruti Wagon R Manjari Harmalkar (66) has also sustained injuries in the accident.

Margao police station in-charge, PI Tulsidas Naik informed that the accident occurred at around 9 am on Friday when the driver of the car Ujvesh Harmalkar, aged 36 years, a resident of Balli, drove his car in a rash and negligent manner on the Western bypass between Navelim and Khareband.

He said when the car reached near Vidhya Vikas Society building, on the Western bypass Navelim, dashed against a Pleasure scooter which was taking turn towards the right of the road.

He said the pillion rider Anna Joaquina Pires e Andrade, aged 79 years and the car occupant Manjari Harmalkar, aged 66 years sustained injuries. The pillion rider later succumbed to her injuries at the South District Hospital Margao.

He said the the car driver Ujvesh Harmalkar was later placed under arrest.

Local residents have demanded that the PWD authorities rectify and fix the issues on the Western bypass which has resulted in accidents at the spot, saying the bypass road has become an accident prone zone.
