As the western bypass along the wholesale fish market-Nuvem-Dongorim stretch lay in pitch darkness for the last couple of months, residents of Nuvem on Wednesday hit the streets to stage a protest over the non-functional street illumination on the bypass.
What prompted the residents to stage the protest was a road accident on the bypass where the eastern bypass joins the western bypass at Dongorim, leaving the rider and pillion rider critically injured.
They demanded to know how the street illumination on the wholesale fish market-Dongorim stretch of the bypass has not been functioning for the last four months and the action initiated by the PWD, NH to get the contractor to repair and restore the illumination.
Congress leader Everson Vales told the media that no day passes without an accident on the stretch of the bypass. “Motorists have to drive in pitch-dark conditions on this stretch of the bypass. We had complained to the South Goa district Collector to take immediate steps to restore the illumination, but in vain,” he said.
Vales and other residents requested the PWD and other authorities to immediately repair and restore the illumination. Though no deadline has been set for the authorities to restore the illumination, the residents have threatened to escalate the matter.
