Being non-committal about re-evaluation of papers of the 8000-odd candidates that did not make the cut in the accountants recruitment exam held in January last, Director of Accounts Prakash Pereira said on Thursday that re-evaluation was not a decision that the Directorate of Accounts (DoA) could take.
“Re-evaluation is not something that we can decide. I don’t think it’s possible. They (Congress) have put forth their demands, we could perhaps discuss this,” said Pereira.
Explaining that the entire process right from conducting the exam to scrutinising of papers and preparation of results was undertaken by the Goa Board, Pereira was also non-committal about whether the 8000 students who had not made the cut would be allowed to re-answer the exam or whether they would have to fill the form again.
Pereira also refused to name the figure paid to the Goa Board to set the question papers for the exam, saying instead that DoA had paid the Board its “standard charges.”
The DoA is currently short of around 100 accountants, confirmed the director. The exam, which had a cut-off of 50 and 60 marks respectively for its two papers, worked just like any other competitive exam where candidates first had to make the cut to qualify for the examination, after which percentile would be considered.
Contrary to the statements being made by Congress and AAP, the candidates did not ‘fail’ in the exam - they simply did not attain the cut-off percentage needed.
Both parties however, continued slamming the government with the Congress asking why the Goa Board was allowed to set the paper for an exam being answered by graduate students, when the Board usually sees to education upto Higher Secondary level.
The AAP called the whole episode a “scam” on the lines of the Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh.
