In an interesting development in the Margao Municipal Council embezzlement of Rs 17.96 lakh by the Margao Municipal LDC, it has come to light that the accused Yogesh Shetkar had officially accepted and transferred in his account revenue from the feast fair amounting to Rs three-odd lakh only.
What’s further interesting to note is that the LDC had returned Rs three-odd lakh amount to the Margao Municipal Council immediately after a meeting of the Margao Municipal Council wherein it was decided to initiate action, including disciplinary proceedings and police complaint, against the employee.
Given that nothing is on record to prove that the LDC had transferred the entire amount of Rs 17.96 lakh in his bank account instead of depositing the same in the Municipal treasury, the Margao police has initiated the process of recording the statements of the Margao Municipal Market Inspectors, who had accompanied the accused LDC at the feast fair to collect the revenue from the hawkers.
“The police has called the market inspectors to record their statements to show that they had witnessed the LDC taking money from the hawkers at the feast fair”, informed the police.
Meanwhile, the police investigations into the case have not helped to trace and recover the amount that was allegedly embezzled by the LDC. Some of the accounts checked by the police have revealed no balance in the accounts.
Margao Police station in-charge, PI Tulsidas Naik, however, exuded confidence of effecting recovery of the amount from the accused.
As the seven days police remand of the accused LDC expires on Thursday, the Margao police is expected to seek further remand of the accused in police custody to take the investigations to the logical conclusion.
